NGC 660

NGC 660
NGC 660

Set against a background of hundreds of distant galaxies, NGC 660 has a very unusual appearance. Located 45 million light years away, it is a polar ring galaxy. This is a very rare galaxy type. Polar ring galaxies have a large population of stars, gas, and dust orbiting in rings heavily tilted from the plane of the galactic disk.

Imaged in LRGB and on our RiDK 700 at El Sauce (Obstech) in the Atacama Desert in Chile.
