NGC 1253 also listed as interacting pair ARP 279 (ARP peculiar galaxy catalog) is a spiral galaxy 74 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus.
It is accompanied by NGC 1253A and the pair are interacting with each other causing visible distortion in both galaxies.
NGC 1253 is listed in the NED data base as a barred spiral galaxy but this may be a misclassification as there is no bar that appears visible.
The area has not been the subject of any extensive studies that I could find.
