Abell 78 is a planetary nebula located 5000 light years away in Cygnus. Abell 78 belongs to a rare subclass of planetary nebulae called born again planetary nebula. While the dying star that formed the nebula has run out of nuclear fuel and has thrown off its outer layers to form the nebula, a thermonuclear runaway at its surface ejects material at high speeds. This ejecta shocks and sweeps up the material of the old nebula, producing the filaments and irregular shell around the central star.
