IC 4710 is a dwarf irregular galaxy situated 26 million light years away in the constellation of Pavo.
As an irregular dwarf the galaxy has a very disorganized appearance without a central bulge or spiral arms. Some astronomers believe that irregular galaxies may have once been spiral or elliptical galaxies, but became distorted through interaction with other galaxies.
Dwarf galaxies are often studied as they are thought to be similar to the first galaxies that formed the universe. This theory is however now in question as the JWST telescope sees further and further into the universe challenging many existing theories about the age of the universe and the formation of early galaxies.
