NGC 5643 is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Lupus. It is located at a distance of 60 million light years from Earth. It is an estimated 100,000 light years across.
NGC 5643 has an active galactic nucleus and is a type II Seyfert galaxy. The core of the galaxy emits strong radio waves and x rays and twin jet have been observed. The bright central portion has large quantities of glowing gas thought to be falling into a massive black hole.
