NGC 2626 is located around 3300 light years from Earth within the large HII region of RCW 27 or Gum 14.
The major contributor to the ionization of RCW 27 is the O star HD 73882, west of NGC 2626. NGC 2626 is also joined to a dark dust cloud cataloged as DC 259.94−0.0 The Herbig Haro objects HH 132-3 are visible in the area around the central star.
